Young, a 6-10, 220-pound senior from St. Dominic High School in Oyster Bay, was selected in the 22nd round by Philadelphia. The fireballing lefthander was 7-0 with a 0.66 ERA and 70 strikeouts in 42 2⁄3 innings this season. The three-year varsity starter had two shutouts among his victories.
Three came in the third quarter, and the last sparked a 21-second, fourth-quarter burst in which his boys lacrosse team scored three times and opened a seven-goal lead in the clinching 15-10 win over St. Dominic.
Cooney darted in, left his feet and made the game-saving catch in the Firebirds’ 5-3 win, sending them to the CHSAA finals.

The senior right-hander tossed a complete-game, three-hit shutout to lead Chaminade to a 10-0 win over St. Dominic’s. The Flyers captured their 17th NSCHSAA title and first since 2011, sweeping the best-of-three series.
The Flyers (18-3) moved within a win of the CHSAA championship and will meet St. Dominic (13-8) in Game 2 at 10 a.m. Monday at New York Tech. If the Bayhawks win, Game 3 will be played immediately thereafter.
